In 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX and took control of the state freeing all enslaved people. The arrival of the troops was two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Considered the longest-running African American holiday, it was officially recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.
